Rohr to rework Eagles for World Cup ticket

Super Eagles manager, Gernot Rohr, has said he would work on the Super Eagles attack and defense to ensure Nigeria qualifies for the 2018 World Cup. On his first day with the media in Uyo on Wednesday, the German had said it would be difficult to guarantee a ticket but would work hard to get it for Nigeria.

After the Saturday game, the new manager said the Eagles played well even though they could not score many goals adding that the match has given him quality insight into the strength and weakness of the team. By his estimate, the Eagles had more than 12 scoring chances and now he hopes to work on the team’s attack to improve the system for future games.

He, however, praised the Tanzanian goalkeeper for his fantastic safes.

Nigeria recorded their first competitive win at the Ibom International Stadium, Uyo after a hard battle 1-0 win over Tanzania in an AFCON qualifier. Both teams failed to qualify from the group behind Egypt.

The first half started in frenzy with the Taifa Stars making the first challenge but the Eagles later assumed dominance in the game and maintained such until the final whistle.

The Nigerians were however guilty of numerous misses with Victor Moses and Ahmed Musa failing to convert many of the numerous chances created into goals. Odion Ighalo was also starved of quality feeds with Kelechi Iheanacho restricted to some few half-hearted chances especially in the first half.

The Eagles continued from where they stopped in the second half but could not find the net early due to the heroics of the Tanzanian goalkeeper and poor marksmanship.

Despite Rohr ringing the changes in the midfield with Mikel Obi, Moses and Ighalo making way in the second half the Eagles were still unable to find the much needed breakthrough.

A moment of brilliance from Kelechi deep into the second half saved the day as his thunderbolt hit the upright before nestling in the back of the net for the only goal of the match.

Efforts to increase the tally proved abortive as the match gradually petered out for another three points that proved useless for the 2013 AFCON champions.
